Sydney Qibla Direction
Point yourself toward the Kaaba in Makkah from Sydney CBD and the bearing is 277.50°, measured clockwise from true north. Every suburb has its own slightly different bearing, from 277.41° to 277.95°.
Point the top of your phone. The gold arrow is Qibla.
Qibla is 277.5° from true north
On a phone with a compass sensor, the gold arrow rotates automatically to always point toward Makkah as you turn (iPhone asks for one-time compass permission first, tap Enable Live Compass to grant it), correcting for Sydney's +12.82° East magnetic declination (NOAA WMM-2025).
On a desktop or a phone without a working sensor, the arrow above simply shows the fixed, north-up bearing. That's the correct fallback here, not an error.

How the direction is calculated
The Qibla is the shortest great-circle bearing from your location to the Kaaba in Makkah (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E). It is computed offline, not fetched from an API, with the same formula used across every page on this site.

Why it points north-west
Sydney sits south-east of Makkah. A straight line drawn on a flat map looks like it should point north-west-ish anyway. But the actual shortest path across the globe's curved surface, the great-circle route, also runs north-west over Asia rather than the diagonal a flat map suggests. This isn't a calculation error, just what's normal across most of the Southern Hemisphere.

Why you can trust this bearing
Formula validated exactly
Checked against Aladhan's own live Qibla API at three points, with a 0.000° difference every time.
Real magnetic declination
+12.82°E for Sydney, sourced from NOAA's WMM-2025 model, cross-checked against a second independent source.
Every suburb, individually
No competitor publishes a per-suburb Qibla bearing across Sydney. Each of 139 suburb pages has its own.
Computed offline
No API call needed at runtime. The bearing is exact geometry from your coordinates to the Kaaba.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Qibla direction from Sydney? +
From Sydney CBD, the Qibla (direction to the Kaaba in Makkah) is 277.50°, measured clockwise from true north. It varies slightly, from 277.41° to 277.95°, across Greater Sydney's suburbs. Search your own suburb above for its exact bearing.
Why does the Qibla from Sydney point north-west, not directly at Makkah on a map? +
Because a flat map distorts direction. The Qibla is the shortest great-circle route across the globe's curved surface. From Sydney that route runs north-west over Asia rather than in a straight line across a flat map.
Is my phone's compass accurate enough for Qibla? +
It's a good starting point, but phone compasses read magnetic north, not true north. They can also be thrown off by nearby metal or electronics. For precise alignment, especially in a mosque or at home, cross-check with a qualified local source.
How is the Qibla direction calculated on this site? +
With the standard great-circle bearing formula, using the Kaaba's coordinates (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E) and your own location. It's computed offline, not fetched from an API. It has also been validated to match Aladhan's own Qibla API exactly at every point checked.
